Fly casting, when done properly is almost
effortless. The most common mistakes are, letting fly line release
during the back cast, and going too far back with the fly rod on the back
cast. The purpose of the back cast is to transfer power to the fly
rod, much like a bow. The energy from the bent fly rod is than
transferred into a very long cast. The other common mistake is too
many false cast. A maximum of two false cast should be made, no matter
how far you want to cast. Practice is very important, and the
knowledge that other people are casting 100', and therefore it is possible.

The other part of the cast is the
retrieve. Upon impact with the water, four or five quick strips of the
line. This will often times result in a reaction strike by any muskie
in the area. Then a methodical stripping of the line, watching the fly
and line to detect any following muskies. About 20 feet from the boat,
a zig - zag is implemented. At boatside, a figure 8 finishes off the
retrieve. The fly must be fished all of the way to the boat to
maximize your chances of catching a following muskie.
