Welcome to the Pond Monster Web Site.

The purpose of this website is not to sell you something.  The Pond Monster does this because he loves the outdoors, and would like to share this with any interested parties.  Having fun, experiencing nature, and learning something is more important than actually catching a fish.  On the other hand, learning something that is useful does result in being a better fishermen.  The thoughts and strategies that are used are the results of being observant.  Trying to understand how different fish operate within the eco-system that they occupy.

Before I go any further, I want to make it clear, the Pond Monster practices Catch & Release.  The health of the muskie or other fish, is of primary importance.  All 500 plus muskies caught in the last four years, were handled diligently,  and  quickly released to swim away.  Being caught on a single hook greatly reduces the chance of injury, and if the handling of the fish takes longer than might be desireable, no picture is taken.  Pictures are taken to provide a record and to store memories.  While looking at a picture of a 36" muskie, some might ask why take that picture.  You have caught many muskies & bigger muskies.  Memories, that is why.  One picture from a cold nasty day, brings back all of the thoughts and sensations from that day.

Fly fishing for muskies is a fantastic challenge, this challenge was amplified by the lack of good information on the subject.  The basic nature of most fly fishermen is to listen and observe what other people are doing.  Take this advice and to develop their own strategy.  Therefore, the Pond Monster is not offended by questions and doubts.  Maybe your questions and doubts will help open up new ideas and thoughts.  Strategies and preparations are a great deal of the fun

One suggestion, it would be beneficial if you too would keep a journal or notebook on thoughts, ideas & experiences.  Going back over my journal from two years ago, brings back some good ideas that have been ignored.  The revelation that something was noticed and later forgotten, is like looking at an old picture of a beautiful muskie.

Hopefully, you will learn enough to develop your own strategy, and have enough success to catch a couple of 45 inch muskies.  The effort to learn , and to be successful will all become part of the enjoyment.

The Namekagon River that runs through Hayward has some beautiful muskies, and almost nobody fishes for them.  A real treat to be able to catch a beautiful muskie only minutes from your front door.  The Namekagon also has some really nice smallmouths, check out the two shown below.  Both in the 21" class.
